Why You Should Post Reels on Instagram

Does anyone else feel like a metaphorical slave to the Instagram algorithm?

You post something and it flops, you post something and it does great! Except you aren’t exactly sure what on earth it was you did… Your thoughts are consumed with trying to figure out WHAT works. All you’re asking for is for your content to just reach the right people. Is that really so much to ask?

While we won’t claim to be complete savants of the Instagram algorithm (can anyone honestly claim that?), we can tell you that Reels have proven to be a very useful tool to have in your arsenal!

What Are Reels?

While video content has been long standing on the platform, somewhere around Q1 of 2022 Instagram’s algorithm pivoted and began favoring video content. Think TikTok except, Instagram calls their videos: Reels.

Since the launch of Reels, Instagram has released statements saying that their algorithm will promote Reels over stagnant photos to your potential audience.

Tips for Posting Reels

We aren’t gonna lie, there are a LOT of nuances to posting content on Instagram. However, we have found that these easy tips are good to keep in mind if you’re just getting started with posting Reels.

  • Look for trending audio to use for your video. You want to see that upwards arrow next to the title of the song. Under 10,000 uses is a good place to be but if you really like an audio and it exceeds 10,000 uses, don’t let that stop you!

  • Keep your video content dynamic. Change angles or emphasize movement every 2-3 seconds.

  • Make use of the categories tab! Instagram will allow you to choose categories that will help better match your Reel to your desired audience.

  • Use the Location feature.

  • Utilize the text feature when you can!

  • Create as much of your Reel within the Instagram app as possible!

Can You ONLY Post Reels Now?

Does this mean you should never post regular photos again?

NO!

While reels can help you reach a wider audience, at the end of the day your account is yours only. Post on your feed what makes you happy and represents you and your brand best.

Additionally, carousel posts (posts where you have more than one photo) are shown to still get great engagement. Ideally you should avoid posting only one photo if you can help it, but like we said - it’s your account! Post what makes you happy and keeps your brand authentic to you.

Should You Re-Post TikToks?

Should you repost TikToks as Reels on your account? (We know, a LOT goes into content creation and some shortcuts would be nice.) But, NO!

Instagram representatives have also mentioned in several recent articles that reposting TikToks (meaning videos still branded with the TikTok logo you've downloaded) are a big no-no.

Instagram wants to see unique, original content from you. It's okay if you are using the same video content, but avoid reposting something covered in TikTok's logo!

Above all, find a posting groove that works for you, try not to agonize over all the aspects of the algorithm and enjoy showing off your business and all it has to offer!
